The Chinese Culture Essay -- essays research papers fc

The Chinese Culture This report is about the legends and convictions of the Chinese culture. It's about the accounts the Chinese made to clarify their general surroundings, and for the most part how they saw their general condition. This report manages antiquated legends and the individuals who trusted them, and what the current accepts of these individuals are. The Southwest Creation Story The Southwest creation story is a legend which clarifies why individuals are extraordinary. The fantasy starts by saying that there were individuals on earth who were all indistinguishable, which means there weren't individuals who were dark, white, oriental, and so on.. It states that the people on earth all for the most part were the equivalent. There were likewise divine beings who lived over the mists in the sky. What's more, there was a colossal sublime stepping stool which began a mountain and arrived at all the path up to paradise's entryway. It proceeds to recount to an account of a man who had two kids. One was a young lady and the other was a kid. They lived in a house which had an enormous thick rooftop. The man had assembled the rooftop so thick since it came down consistently. He despised the downpour. He knew it had its advantages however a lot of it demolished his harvests, wrecked his animals also, every time it down-poured the top of the house was annihilated. Also, unfailingly the man reconstructed it, he made it thicker and thicker. He accused all his incident on the Duke of Thunder. The Duke of Thunder was one of the divine beings who lived in the sky. He was the divine force of downpour and thunder. The man dispised the Duke without a doubt and had an unadulterated contempt of him. Each time it came down the Duke would plummet from the sky and remain on a peak. There he would watch with unadulterated pleasure as the downpours and thunder came down increasingly hard. At long last the man had enough. One day he took his hatchet and looked out for the peak for the Duke to show up. At the point when the downpours came so did the Duke, and the man cut him in the back. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â The Duke was hurt however not slaughtered in light of the fact that he was a divine being. The man confined him and brought him home. He put him in a corner and cautioned the children not to go close to him. Furthermore, to particularly not give him water. The following morning was a wonderful bright one, yet the Duke looked ghastly as though he was drying out. The man told the youngsters he needed to go to the market and said again not to go close to the Duke no matter wha... ... his child. Zoa was murdered by his own sibling who was embarrassed about what his more youthful kin had become. What the entertainer didn't reveal to Zoa was which close relative would murder him. Zoa who had become arrogant wasn't as incredible as he suspected he might have been. Also, he was too self-important to not realize that the divine beings ought not be tested. This fantasy tells that turning out to be arrogant will inevitably hurt you and that nobody could beat their predetermination. The Chinese in this story trusted in the divine beings, they were strict individuals and this legend tells that the divine beings ought not be tested. Both of these legends were composed quite a while prior and I don't feel that the individuals today despite everything put stock in these legends as unequivocally as the individuals who composed them did. I believe it resembles Halloween in our way of life. We despite everything practice the custom as the old individuals did yet we don't have as much as a solid accept in phantoms and trolls as our predecessors did. Book reference Birch, Cyril. In What Way Should University Courses Be Changed to Suit the Economic Needs of Society

In What Way Should University Courses Be Changed to Suit the Economic Needs of Society? The majority of society members are broadening the expectations they have for the universities. In this case people are taking into consideration values of personal human capital. The majority of people require from the higher education more concentration on the skills of transferable workplace. Students usually ask two similar questions: â€Å"Why should I go through all these university courses if they are absolutely useless for my future career?† and â€Å"What kind of job can I obtain with such a degree?† The problem is that the majority of the universities do not have such a specific aim – to prepare students for the future career. They do not take into consideration economic needs of society. Thus, students leave university buildings without skills in how to survive in the economic area of society needs. The main concern is that it is necessary to attribute to the university the concept of workplace skills. Moreover, it is extremely important to provide students with the knowledge of the economic benefits they can obtain at the university courses. The main aim of the university leaders should be related not only to knowledge transference and learning support providing, but also to teaching what economic advantages they are sure to have after the graduation. Unfortunately, the majority of students graduate being absolutely helpless and having no opportunity to adapt to the economic needs the society presents. It is important to not just to acquire knowledge, but to be able to put it into practice and feel like you are called for it as well! To meet such requirements our governments should realize that in our life everything’s not just about money, but it’s about people’s lives too.

A Propagation Plan For A Commercial Nursery - 1850 Words

1. A propagation plan is a record of plants propagated listing the type of plant, method of propagation, pre-treatments, date of sow, germination, pricked out, type of pot and dispatch date. 2. A propagation plan is important in a commercial nursery because its useful to show how long it takes for a seed or cutting to be in a sellable condition, were improvements can be made next time, if the type of plant goes dormant and when it flowers. 3. Chrysanthemums are often grown for mother’s day, they can easily be propagated by division in spring. Chrysanthemums can also be propagated by seeds and cuttings but seed take a bit longer then both division and cuttings. 4. Many companies provide information to help you propagate their varieties. Water is an important resource in every nursery, capturing and reusing that water through irrigation technology could save thousands of dollars every year. Water storing facilities in the form of large water tanks are essential for water storage in the nursery. Larger nurseries might even use their own dams and treatment facilities. Allowing the water to flow into drains or other non-recycled waterways is illegal, polluting, wasteful, and irresponsible. Applying the water is difficult as small mists allow drift of water while larger faster droplets can damage small plants and the media they are in, thus drip irrigation is optimal if the watering is to be done outside. Drip irrigation can be difficult to fix if blockages appear but they deliver a slow, constant, direct rate of water. Fine sprays can be useful in glass houses were winds don’t effect it. The collection of this water can easily be achieved by removing the top 12cm of soil with one end deeper, lining the hole with plastic and drainage piped, filling it with large lose gravel, attaching some PVC from the drainage pipe to a water tank of dam and adding a pump to reuse the water. 2. Waste management in a nursery should be minimised as waist products means lost money. Always look for a way to reduce, reuse recycle. For

Alternative Dispute Resolution University of Phoenix Learning Team Essay Example For Students

Alternative Dispute Resolution: University of Phoenix Learning Team Essay Any group or team that works together to achieve a common goal is bound to experience some form of conflict. In the context of a University of Phoenix learning team, settling these disputes in an efficient and quick manner allows the team to be more productive and thereby earn a higher grade. Having some form of resolution process in writing for the team to follow when a dispute does happen will then allow for a more effective learning team. Some of the potential disputes that may arise in this setting include differences in opinion regarding the direction of the team or the direction of the project that the team is working on. Additionally, the team might find itself confronted with the problem of a team member not making the contributions he committed to. In this setting it is highly doubtful a team would file some form of lawsuit against the offending member. First, dealing with the costs of such an idea is prohibitive. Second, using a court to settle one of the above situations is just a bit on the extreme side! Not all disputes need to go to court! In fact, going to court would not even be an effective method strictly because of the time it would take to resolve in that manner. The team needs a quick solution to the problem that it faces. Keeping speed, cost, and simplicity all in mind it is obvious that some form of alternative method is called for. Cheeseman (2010) provides several alternatives: Negotiation, Arbitration, Mediation, Conciliation, Mini-Trial, Fact-Finding, and a Judicial Referee. Seeing that ongoing relationships are involved, and a speedy resolution is required, I chose to use Mediation method for the Learning Team Alternative Dispute Resolution Clause. Mediation requires a neutral and knowledgeable third party to meet with the parties involved, gather the pertinent facts and then help the parties reach a mutually agreed settlement (Cheeseman 2010). Further, Morel notes that Mediation successfully resolves disputes 90 percent of the time (2005). The outcome to pursue isn’t necessarily to assign blame for a failure, but rather to change a behavior so that future success can be achieved by the team. This is the facilitative model, as opposed to the evaluative model – which seeks to point out the strengths and weaknesses in each side’s arguments and then forecast the likely outcome if the case were to go to court. Learning Team Alternative Dispute Resolution Clause When a dispute among team members arises, the team members are to find a valid mediator from their non-team member peers. The goal of the mediation should be to clarify team member responsibilities and implement required changes to the team charter so that future disputes will be avoided. References Cheeseman, H. R. R. HISTORICAL CONTENT Essays - Allah, Deities, God, Infinity

HISTORICAL CONTENT Julian of Norwich lived during the late fourteenth century- early fifteenth century. Many things were happening in Europe at that time. The main thing going on at that time was the Bubonic or Black Plague. The plague spread in waves. It was spread by fleas, which got it from infected ship rats. The plague lasted about one-hundred years. The Bubonic Plague was very influential in the works of art and the way people felt at that time period. Another thing going on was the hundred years war. This was actually lasted one-hundred fifteen years, and was fought between the French and British. During the life of Julian the Avignion Papacy was going on. This was when the popes moved from Rome to France and the French kings had a lot of power because the kings and the popes worked together to help each other out. it was a very confusing time at one point they had a French and a roman pope. Eventually, it was all straightened out with some help from Catherine of Sienna who had a dream were God told her the pope needed to be in Rome. She told her story to pope Gregory XI who returned the papacy to Rome. The first great work of literature in the English language was The Canterbury Tales, written by Geoffrey Chaucer around 1390. Chaucer was, at various times, a court page, a soldier, and a diplomat. His travels exposed him to a variety of men and women, many of whom served as models for his vivid characters. Chaucer tells the story of a group of pilgrims bound for the shrine of Thomas ? Becket, who entertained themselves by telling tales. Also at that time the Aztec empire was taking off and it was taken over by the Spaniards in 1521. CONTENT In Julian's visions, she believes Jesus is communicating directly with her because the images she sees are so vivid and real, and she believes she felt Heaven. It was then that Julian realized that the trinity is everything good in the world. She felt unworthy to receive these images but God still gave them to her. She feels Mary's thoughts and realizes that Jesus wanted to live as a human, as one of his Father's creatures. After this is when she decides to turn her life over to God. She feels that God is always with us, helping and loving. Realizing that God loves everything, no matter how big or small, rich or poor. Julian believes we, like god, must consider every little thing and love it. The man-made things are what God thinks we are too good for. He want's us to have the best, which is him, and remember that he made people to love other people. As we saw in these papers we read, God's message to us is that we will all die in the end, and our souls will either go with Him or His outcast angel, Lucifer. Us humans see death as a bad thing but it should be looked at with glory because we are going to a better place with better people and the only Lord. However some people can be damned to hell if they don't follow God's simple laws. The Lord has a great deed for us, but it will only be reviled to us when He say's the time has come and if we achieve it then we will have made this world a better place. In the papers, God as Mother, in my opinion symbolizes the beginning of all. Mothers are what nurture and protect and care for us from the beginning. They watch over us and we come from them. These images are almost always portrayed as God, we come from him and he watches over us, like a mother. PERSONAL REFLECTION There are some very moving points in Julian's visions. Some points she makes in her book are very moving and get me thinking about my own personal views on the stuff she talks about. I am at time very courious about my religion, as you will see later in the essay. The Future of Human Space Exploration

The Future of Human Space Exploration From Here to There: Human Space Flight People have a solid future in space, with regular flights to the International Space Station continuing to bring astronauts to low-Earth orbit for science experiments. But, the ISS isnt the only extent of our push to the new frontier. The next generation of explorers is already alive and preparing for journeys to the Moon and Mars. They could be our children and grandchildren, or even some of us reading stories online right now. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station in blue jumpsuits. NASA Companies and space agencies are testing new rockets, improved crew capsules, inflatable stations, and futuristic concepts for lunar bases, Mars habitats, and orbiting lunar stations. There are even plans for asteroid mining. It wont be long before the first super-heavy-lift rockets such as the next-generation Ariane (from ESA), SpaceXs Starship (Big Falcon Rocket), the Blue Origin rocket, and others will be blasting off to space. And, in the very near future, humans will be aboard, too.   Space Flight is in Our History Flights to low-Earth orbit and out to the Moon have been a reality since the early 1960s.  Human exploration of space actually began in 1961. Thats when Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man  in  space. He was followed by other Soviet and U.S. space explorers who landed on the  Moon circled Earth in space stations and  labs and blasted off aboard shuttles and space capsules. Yuri Gagarin, the first human to fly to space. alldayru.com Planetary exploration with robotic probes is ongoing. There are plans for an asteroid exploration, Moon colonization, and eventual Mars missions in the relatively near future. Yet, some people still ask, why explore space? What have we done so far? These are important questions and have very serious and practical answers. Explorers have been answering them throughout their careers as astronauts. Living and Working in Space The work of the men and women who have already been in space have helped establish the process of learning  how to live and there.  Humans have established a long-term presence in low-Earth orbit with the International Space Station, and U.S. astronauts spent time on the Moon in the late 1960s and early1970s. Plans for human habitation of Mars or the Moon are in the works, and some missions- such as the long-term assignments in space of such astronauts as Scott Kellys year in space- test astronauts to see how the human body reacts on long missions to other planets (such as Mars, where we already have robotic explorers) or spend lifetimes on the Moon.  In addition, with long-term explorations, its inevitable that people will start families in space or on another world. Very little is known about how successful that will be or what we may call new generations of space humans. Astronaut Sunita Williams exercising aboard the International Space Station. NASA Many mission scenarios for the future follow a familiar line:  establish a space station (or two), create science stations and colonies, and then after testing ourselves in near-Earth space, take the leap to Mars. Or an asteroid or two. Those plans are in the long-term; at best, the first Mars explorers most likely wont set foot there until the 2020s or 2030s. The Near-term Goals of Space Exploration   A number of countries around the world have plans for space exploration, among them China, India, the United States, Russia, Japan, New Zealand, and the European Space Agency. More than 75 countries have agencies, but only a few have launch capability. NASA and the Russian Space Agency are partnering to bring astronauts to the International Space Station. Since the space shuttle fleet retired in 2011, Russian rockets have been blasting off with Americans (and astronauts of other nationalities) to the ISS. NASAs Commercial Crew and Cargo program are working with companies such as Boeing, SpaceX, and United Launch Associates to come up with safe and cost-effective ways to deliver humans to space.  In addition, Sierra Nevada Corporation is proposing an advanced space plane called the Dream Chaser, and already has contracts for European use.   The current plan (in the second decade of the 21st century) is to use the Orion crew vehicle, which is very similar in design to the Apollo capsules (but with more-advanced systems), stacked atop a rocket, to bring astronauts to a number of different locations, including the ISS. The hope is to use this same design to take crews to near-Earth asteroids, the Moon, and Mars. The system is still being built and tested, as are space launch systems (SLS) tests for the necessary booster rockets. Water recovery of the Orion crew capsule in testing. NASA   The design of the Orion capsule was widely criticized by some as a giant step backward, particularly by people who felt that the nations space agency should try for an updated shuttle design (one that would be safer than its predecessors  and with more range). Due to technical limitations of the shuttle designs, plus the need for reliable technology (plus political considerations that are both complex and ongoing), NASA chose the Orion concept (after the cancellation of a program called Constellation).   Beyond NASA and Roscosmos The United States is not alone in sending people to space. Russia intends to continue operations on the ISS, while China has sent astronauts to space, and the Japanese and Indian space agencies are moving ahead with plans to send their own citizens as well. The Chinese have plans for a permanent space station, set for construction in the next decade. The China National Space Administration has also set its sights on the exploration of Mars, with possible crews setting foot on the Red Planet beginning perhaps in 2040. India has more modest initial plans. The Indian Space Research Organization (which has a mission at Mars) is working to develop a launch-worthy vehicle and carry a two-member crew to low-Earth orbit perhaps in the next decade. The Japanese Space Agency JAXA has announced its plans for a space capsule to deliver astronauts to space by 2022 and has also tested a space plane. The far distant future may well hold new ways of getting around space. Here, two spaceships enter a wormhole in outer space to get to another part of the galaxy. Such travel isnt possible yet, so humans are still constrained to exploring near-Earth space. Corey Ford/Stocktrek Images The interest in space exploration continues. Whether or not it manifests itself as a full-blown race to Mars or rush to the Moon or trip to mine an asteroid remains to be seen. There are many difficult tasks to accomplish before humans are routinely jetting off to the Moon or Mars. Nations and governments need to evaluate their long-term commitment to space exploration. The technological advancements to deliver humans to these places are taking place, as are the tests on humans to see if they really CAN withstand the rigors of long space flights to alien environments  and safely live in a more dangerous environment than Earth. It now remains for the social and political spheres to come to terms with humans as a space-faring species.

Letter to David Mitchell Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Letter to David Mitchell - Assignment Example I believe that boring teachers should reconsider their approaches of teaching. While teaching the same curriculum becomes boring, year in and year out, making the subject interesting is the challenge for the teacher. It becomes easier for the teacher to teach the same subject after each year passes by; and most teachers take the easy option. While it does become easier, it becomes more challenging in the way the teacher should approach the topic. Christine Gilbert by making the proposal of sacking boring teachers is jolting them awake and pushing the envelope further for these boring teachers. She is shocking them into action and I believe that it is high time someone did that. Did you know that high school dropout is increasing at an alarming pace and more than 50 percent of the students cite boring teachers and lack of interest in the subject taught at school as the primary reason for leaving school? In one sentence you suggest that that, "one of the reasons for this may be that th ey are bored themselves†. I agree that the teachers may become bored but this is no excuse against teaching boring lessons. The teacher can stimulate interest by involving students in the lesson. However, as I say all this I realize that teachers cannot do this all the time. They are pressed for resources and time. They have to teach so much in so little time with the principal hounding them to maintain discipline in class. Schools are becoming boring, it is not the teachers but the school that is becoming boring by being too rule oriented. Teachers, however, can change this by asking the school authorities to be more accommodating. Did you not have any teacher whose lessons you looked forward to? I know I have had such teachers. I also have had my share of boring and interesting teachers. Some teachers are boring because they have no interest in teaching. They take their job as just a job. They take a responsibility of teaching students and they just do that. However, there a re teachers who understand the essence of being a teacher. They engage us. I think boring teachers are only churning out students who are ill equipped to handle higher education such as colleges and universities. Even though I understand that teachers are not very highly paid, I do not think that I would want such teachers to be paid to teach me. I want teachers who are passionate about their jobs and are ready to accept the challenge of fighting the boredom of the same subject.. For me, the best teacher should have the following qualities: She should be passionate about her job; She should be able to communicate with the students on their level; and She should come up with lessons that activate the minds of the students. You state that Christine Gilbert's ideas ‘ignores the fact that some of the things children really ought to learn are boring...Are we going to phase out math in favour of more media studies and dance?’ Here again I disagree, Math is not boring. When yo u say that ‘quadratic equations are boring the first time’, it makes me wonder what boring teachers you have had. Some subjects are dry but they can be made more interesting in the way they are caught. Even media studies and dance can be made boring if the teacher focuses on too much technicality and theory. I understand that theory is boring and needs to be taught. But when a teacher focuses too much on theory and less of practical knowledge, students lose interest. You state that students

Pythagorean Theorem Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Pythagorean Theorem - Essay Example â€Å"The area of the square built upon the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares upon the remaining sides† (Audy & Morosini, 2007). Hence, the Pythagorean Theorem can be used to find out the length of the side of a right angled triangle when the lengths of the two other sides are known. The theorem has a range of real life applications. For instance, it can be used to measure the distance between two cities in a map, height of an object from the length of its shadow, the length of the diagonal of a rectangle and for many other purposes. The longest side of a triangle is called hypotenuse, while the remaining two sides are called the legs of the triangle. The algebraic expression of the Pythagorean Theorem can be written as follows: As Sonnenberg, Wittenberg, Ferrucci, Mueller and Simeone (1981) point out, the Pythagorean Theorem is helpful to calculate the unknown length of a side of a right angled triangle, if the lengths of the other two sides are known. Similarly, in a right angled triangle, the length of the hypotenuse is greater than other two sides, but less than the sum of their lengths. The above figure contains four copies of a right angled triangle having sides a, b, and c; which are arranged in a square having side c. Hence, each triangle has an area of  ½ab whereas the small square has a side b-a and an area (b – a) 2. Hence, the area of the large square becomes, It has been proved that the converse of this theorem is also true. Hence, for any triangle with sides a, b, and c; and a2 + b2 = c2, the angle between the legs a and b will be a right angle (90o) (cited in Serra, 1994). In total, Pythagorean Theorem is one of the fundamental theorems of mathematics. The theorem has a range of proofs and its converse is also true. Above all, it has a wide range of applications in the real life. Sonnenberg, E. V., Wittenberg, J., Ferrucci, J. T., Mueller, P. R. & Simeone, J. F. (1981).

Prose Study Coursework Essay Example for Free

Prose Study Coursework Essay In chapters 13 and 14 of the novel Treasure Island, through use of different literary techniques such as animal imagery, similes, metaphors, assonance and many more, Stevenson achieves a sense of foreboding as to what will happen later in the novel, dropping hints here and there. These chapters are important because the crew of the Hispaniola, including Lon John Silver and Jim Hawkins, have just landed on the island, and are about to set off in search off the buried treasure. We can even get a sense of foreboding from the island itself as it is seen to be gloomy and mysterious, and this does not bode well for the adventure ahead. We can find foreboding through the authors use of similes and metaphors in the chapters. Spires of naked rock, is a way of saying the rocks are very tall and imposing, as well as exposed. This is scary as just reading the exerpt creates a dark atmosphere, and it paves the way for the future of the novel. This is achieved by use of dark colours, and naked implies that after Jim has escaped there is nowhere that he can hide, because everyone can see everything. This creates the effect on the reader of sadness, as they really feel for Jim, as he is trapped on the island with those monsters. Jim also gives away hints towards the future events of Treasure Island when he says my heart sank when he realises what he has done in sneaking ashore with the pirates away from people he knows he can trust and this shows his disappointment. Jims downbeat mood portrays a bad effect to the reader, and they start to feel for Jim, as bad things obviously loom later in the novel, for instance, the planned mutiny of Long John Silver, and how if successful, Jim and his comrades will be doomed, and Jims capture by the pirates. The quotation hung over the anchorage is used to create a bad air and produce fearful images in your mind. Foreboding is shown because there is obviously a bad atmosphere on board, symbolising the planned mutiny of Long John Silver, and the good hands on board are of course fretting over what to do. Clouds of birds conveys to the reader the image of a deep mass of birds, and when there is a lot of something, especially animals that are making lots of noise, can strike fear in to people. This can give us an insight into what may happen later because birds are good at sensing danger, and quickly fly away if anything unsettles them. If they are very disturbed and are hanging over the ship, then surely the mutiny must be destined to happen, and the crew must have to face the wrath of Long John Silver. Through animal imagery we can get a sense of fear such as crawling on all fours when Jim is near Long John Silver and he is crouching when he has run away from Silver and does not want to be seen. This shows us what may happen later in the novel because it shows Jim is scared of Long John Silver and Silver is not really a very good person, and is planning bad things later in the novel. Agile as a monkey when used to describe Silver is showing him in a bad light, because he is deceiving everyone by hobbling around everywhere with his wooden leg, however, when he is out of view of the captain he is very quick and has lots of agility, which shows appearances can be deceptive and this confirms to us that he is planning a mutiny and other evil activities on the return leg of the journey, behind the other crew members backs. We can also get a sense of foreboding by one of the good mens reactions when he is faced with Silver and does not to be involved in the mutiny. Like a horse at the spur shows the unconverted crew member faced with Long John is very startled by the scream, and he immediately suspects Long John Silver and wants to get away because he knows Long John is starting the process of whittling down the numbers of good men on board to make the future mutiny much easier. Through the quotation crouching trees, when Jim is lost in the woods, we get a sense that Jim is trapped and is enclosed by the trees which seem alive, which is a good example of personification. This creates a sense of what may happen in the future as everything so far has had a bad feeling about it, and it can only be a matter of time before something happens. Would not the first of them who saw me wring my neck like a snipes? Fear is created by the rhetorical question and the use of animal imagery, and we feel a sense of sorrow for Jims dire situation. It gives us a premonition that later in the novel if the pirates catch Jim he will be killed straight away. We can decipher what will happen in the immediate future of the novel when Stevenson says Silverwas watching his companion like a snake about to spring. This shows Silver is a conniving, cunning creature, which will do anything to get the treasure, even kill one of his own. As well as this, in the bible, snakes are seen as evil, such as in the Garden of Eden, and people were very religious back then. Also, we now know that Tom will be killed sooner rather than later because snakes dont waste time, and once they have their target, they rarely fail, so this is a clever way of Robert Louis Stevenson building up to Long John Silver committing the murder. Fear imagery can be created using powerful adjectives and can also give us a strong sense of foreboding, through colours used, and words commonly associated with fear. In grey melancholy woods, and wild stone spires, the words grey and melancholy are commonly associated with apprehension, and we get a view to future events because the island in the readers mind is terrifying and forbidding, and Jim has to endure this to escape capture, however, bad images are everywhere, provoking the reader to imagine terrible things happening to Jim on the isle, such as his eventual capture by the pirates, and his life threatening encounter with Israel Hands, in which, he is just successful. Through the citation the outline of the Spy-glass trembled through the haze, we get fear from trembled, because not only is it an imposing land mass, it also is surrounded by a mist, and appears to move. Jim knows he must pass close to this monster of a mountain if he is to succeed on his quest, and it means he has the evil, obsessed pirates on one side, and a sinister peak in front, he is certain to encounter them on his travels, and the chances are, face the consequences. Then one horrid, long-drawn scream is an example of fear imagery because you can imagine a high pitched scream, and the reader sees him or herself in Jims position, alone on a desert island, and is also scared. The assonance of the oo and a slows down the action and gets us to feel and imagine the scream. This shows foreboding because the allies of Jims and his alliance are being whittled down, and in the future there will be only a few remaining. The novel can also show us the imminent events through the use of assonance and consonance. Assonance (the repetition of vowels) is given in should I dare to go down to the boats among those fiends, still smoking from their crime? The way the o sound is repeated many times, and how the sentence flows off the tongue, gives a constant reminder throughout the sentence of the fear that Jim faces, and the decisions he is required to make. In the future, does Jim return to the pirates in hope of a return to the ship, but face Silvers wrath, or does he journey on into the centre of the island in hope of survival, and we know that in the end, the hero Jim ends up in both of these positions, but the reader does not know this and is left guessing. To demonstrate the use of assonance, the sentence what if I returned to the boats and the fiends, still shadowed by their crimes is nowhere near as effective, and creates only a pinch of the fear found in Stevensons actual work. Assonance is also fou nd in a very obvious place. The o sound is repeated in Long John, which is terrifying, as we know he is a main character who is also very evil, and it will be a constant reminder through the future of the novel as to his plans and his traits and the threat he poses. Consonance (the repetition of consonants) can also be found frequently in chapters 13 and 14 and can show us foreboding. In only the rustle of the redescending birds and the boom of the distant surges disturbed the languor of the afternoon, the repetition of r gives the section of text a fear effect along with the good adjectives, because overall, it is speeded up, and creates more of a fast paced action. Also, the atmosphere is affected by the use of onomatopoeia in rustle and boom. Again, an insight is achieved as through the use of effective adjectives and consonance, we see that not all is well on Skeleton Island. Skeleton Island itself suggests fear, as skeletons are a symbol of death and forbidding, and you would be wise to stay away from them. Combining fear adjectives with consonance is also found in a smell ofrotting tree trunks. The use of an ellipsis shows that Jim is thinking and he must recognise the smell from somewhere before. The repetition of r along with rotting creates a sense of fear of the trees, and this is also alliteration, and Jim and the reader begin to think that the island and everything on it must be similar to the experiences here. Through repetition, Stevenson achieves fear, and allows the reader to generate a better image in their mind, as well as emphasising his point further. Of all the gloomy features of that gloomy afternoon, is an example of this. When the author/Jim repeats gloomy, it repeats the fact that the place is gloomy, which is an adjective commonly associated with darkness and fear, so it is stressing that everything is not going well. There is also time left in the day, and other bad things may happen, for instance, Jim running into a trap set by Long John Silver, or the good side being forced out of the stockade by the pirates, and this could just be the beginning. As well as all these things, the repetitions also create a sense of dà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½jà ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½ vu, and that people are going round in circles and they are lost, and all for the treasure, which is the main focus of the novel. Another literary technique that the author uses is alliteration. The sun still shining mercilessly. This is personification, and the consecutive letter s at the start of each word, along with an adjective that is connected with fear and evil created the illustration of the sun being evil, all seeing, and it seems to have deserted the good side, and just seems to be causing more heartache, as they lose the stockade, and the pirates get on the trail of the buried treasure. The overall theme of the chapters generates a sense of foreboding just by itself, because they are to do with pirates and a treasure hunt, and everyone knows that this kind of story is almost certain to have twists and turns later. I also think Jim how Jim goes off by himself into the forest shows he is developing from a boy into a brave young man. Through the use of colours in his writing, Stevenson also creates both a sense of fear and foreboding. Long John Silver is an example of this because Silver is a shade of grey, which is a colour associated with grim things and fear, and it shows foreboding because, if a person is named like this, he must be a character that is planning, or will partake in evil things at some point in the novel. The author also uses black I black conscience to describe Lon g John, as he can kill all these people, and not have them on his mind for the rest of his life, and not feel guilty. In conclusion, I think that the literary techniques used in chapters 13 and 14, are very effective in showing how, or giving hints as to how events may unfold in the latter stages of the novel, as they get closer to the treasure and the race hots up. As I have shown earlier I in my essay, Robert Louis Stevenson uses a great variety of different methods to get his points across, and he is very clever in using some techniques and how they foreshadow events easy to find, however, some you have to search for, and rack your brain to understand how they show foreboding, such as the use of assonance and alliteration. Example, should I dare to go down to the boats among those fiends, still smoking from their crime? Yes, the excellent adjectives help create fear which in turn introduces foreboding, but I had to search for it. My final verdict is that Robert Louis Stevenson is an immensely clever writer, and the way he gets the reader to think is amazing, and through close language analysis, we can see that chapters 13 and 14 are very clear in predicting character development and how events will pan out in the novel.

Dinosaur Fossil Discoveries in Antarctica :: Exploratory Essays Research Papers

Dinosaur Fossil Discoveries in Antarctica The chance of two different research groups finding two different fossils that are in fact two different kinds of species within the course of a week is close to impossible. However, this rare and lucky occurrence in the paleontology world has occured. Two research teams have retrieved fossils of two different dinosaurs in Antarctica that might possibly be unknown species. Judd Case and James Martin discovered bones, specifically those of the lower legs and feet, as well as the animal’s upper jaw and teeth. These fossils are said to be related to the carnivorous theropods, such as tyrannosaurs and velociraptors. Theropods have been related with birds and this new fossil’s feet as well as teeth relate it to the extinct carnivores. Also, due to the size and shape of the foot and leg bones, the animal is said to be a running dinosaur about six to eight feet tall. Thousands of miles away from this excavation sight and during the same week, William Hammer and his research team were in the mountains of Antarctica, about thirteen thousand feet, specifically near the Beardmore Glacier. The pelvis to a plant-eating dinosaur was found buried in solid rock. This pelvis is said to belong to a family of the sauropod, such as the brachiosaurus and diplodocus. â€Å"... Hammer and his fellow researchers believe the pelvis- one meter (three feet) across- isfrom a primitive sauropod that represents one of the earlier forms of emerging dinosaur lineage that eventually produced animals more than thirty meters (100 feet) long† (www.nsf.gov 2004). This animal is estimated to be up to seven feet tall and thirty feet long. These findings are important to paleontology as scientists work to discover more about the Earth’s past. These fossils give more insight into the Earth’s environment million’s of years ago. The fact that these fossils may be new species’ that paleontologists were not even aware of shows how little we may know about the history of the world and what other life walked on the Earth.

The Relationship Between Man and Woman in Araby

Araby James Joyce, an icon of the modernist era had many works that were moving away from the classical styles of literature put before him. Joyce is known for leading his characters towards some kind of personal insight and on the surface, Araby seems to be only about a boy learning about the truth of capitalism. As you dive deep in to his words and meaning however, it is apparent that Joyce’s message is not as black and white as it appears on the surface. This story is also about the relationship between men and women. It is about how women are capable of influencing a man’s actions/behaviors and why men feel as if they need to exert their â€Å"dominance† over women. Joyce purposely makes the protagonist a young boy who chases after an older girl. He does this to elevate the status of the girl and portray her as larger than the boy. He is basically saying early in the story that woman has some kind of superiority over man. The beginning of the story is innocent enough, the boy explains how he plays in the street with his best friend (Mangan) and hides from his uncle so he doesn’t have to go in.This is where the girl is introduced. Neither she nor the boy has a name hinting that they are representative of all men and women. The boy is absolutely infatuated with the girl and it is apparent in the paragraphs right after she is introduced. He watches her from afar, has a certain routine so that he passes her every morning, and even imagines victory due to his love as he walks through his marketplace. She is the focal point of all his thoughts and it is shown that he is helpless to her influence when he utters â€Å"O love!O love! † over and over in private. He is but a helpless romantic during this point of the story driven by his undeserving love for this girl. Their only conversation is a brief, but huge one and what she says and how she acts says all. She plays with her bracelet, signifying the importance of materialistic ite ms in her life and communicating that she would love something from Araby by saying how she would love to go but can’t. The boy bites the bait hard and is hooked immediately to be drug around by the idea of pleasing the girl. Her influence over him increases exponentially after this as he says that he cannot think of anything except her. He can’t sleep, can’t think, can’t read, can’t focus in class and is consumed with the hope that this magical bazaar would grant him the key to the girl’s heart. All these things are clear signs that the girl holds control over him because he has lost all motivation for anything besides pleasing her. The story stays like this, with him obsessing over her until he actually gets to the bazaar as it is closing and his hopes start to fade.Araby is supposed to be this enchanted place with wonderful people and remarkable, exotic items but the boy finds that there is nothing but commonplace junk that he could get fr om his own marketplace. On top of that, he is met by a very distasteful sales clerk who seems very uninterested in him. In most analyses, this is the point of the boy’s insight to the nature of capitalism and realizes that not everything is as pretty as it appears on the surface. This is a very important lesson but it is not the only change that occurs in the boy.The last line of the story is â€Å"Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger. † Joyce definitely did not use passive words to describe the boy’s hurt but chooses a powerful, emotionally charged set of words that paints a very precise, borderline frightening image. He describes the boy as a creature, as if he has lost his humanity and been stripped down to a raw, instinctual beast. A desperate, pissed off animal driven by his feeling of worthlessness with eyes burning from anger and a feeling of deep heartache. These are not words usually used to describe an epiphany about the nature of the world. These are words used to describe the feelings of losing something great, of getting your heart smashed, chewed up and spit out. These are words describing a feeling that this boy will never again want to feel. He realizes that he has opened himself up to be hurt and he was undeniably crushed by his inability to get something that would please the girl his heart yearns for. Joyce was a master of idioms and word choice. He was easily one of the great writers of his time and will always be recognized as such.He is known for writing about how stages in life affect a person as a whole and Araby is no different. Being a great writer of his time he is also a creation of the era he lived in. During his life men believed that they were superior to women, that woman were weak and that they needed a man to support them. It was believed that women were home to weak emotions and men only had time for strong ones makin g them better than women. To say that Joyce wrote a story in which he acknowledges that women have some kind upper hand on men may seem inept but he does a good job of answering why men behaved and felt this way.His reason is that men cannot cope with these â€Å"weak† emotions so they shut them out. The boy in the story â€Å"Araby† is met with his first heartbreak due to the fact that he can’t please the girl that he so desperately desires and immediately becomes this inhuman creature full of anguish. In a time where men are supposed to be the bread-winners; strong confident figures that controls their household, these feelings are unacceptable. It is why men must exhibit nothing but â€Å"strong† emotions and exude their dominance over women, for the fear of being emotionally shattered in the face of them.

The delegates ranged in age from Jonathon Dayton, aged 26, and to Benjamin Franklin at 81 years of age, who was very sick at the time. The plan of the delegates was to remedy the defects in the Articles of Confederation, but Virginia delegates had a new idea in mid and boldly proposed the Virginia Plan, which introduced a whole new national government instead of the confederation. The New Jersey Plan was also presented as an alternative, but it was based mainly on autonomous states being represented by a single chamber.
